Termly alternatives: do you need a generator or a checker?
Termly is a well-known service for creating privacy policies and managing cookie consent. If you are looking at alternatives, it helps to decide first which job you need doing: writing a policy from scratch, or checking the one you already have.
Written 14 October 2026. We have not reviewed Termly or any other product in detail. Check each provider's own website for current features and prices.
Two different jobs
| Compared | Privacy policy generator | Privacy policy checker |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | A questionnaire | The policy you already have |
| Gives you | A new policy to publish | A list of gaps, with fixes and suggested wording |
| Best when | You have no policy yet | You have a policy and need to know if it is still right |
| The risk | Your answers may not match what your website really does | An automated check reads words, not meaning |
Many businesses need both, in that order: a generator or template to get a policy, then a check to make sure it matches the website and the current law.
Questions to ask any tool, if you are in the UK
- Does it cover UK law, not just EU GDPR? The UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and PECR are UK law, and they have changed since the UK left the EU.
- Is it up to date with the 2026 changes? Look for the right to complain to the organisation (in force 19 June 2026), the new cookie exemptions and automated decision rules (5 February 2026), and the Information Commission (30 September 2026). What changed in 2026.
- Does it look at your actual website? A policy should name the analytics, advertising and other tools your site really uses.
- Does it say which findings are law and which are good practice? And does it cite the law?
- What does it cost after the free tier, and what happens to your data?

Questions
Is there a free alternative to Termly for UK businesses?
For writing a policy, the UK regulator offers a free privacy notice generator for small organisations, and free templates are available, including ours. For checking a policy you already have against UK law and your website, The Privacy Register is free.
Is a generated privacy policy enough?
Only if your answers matched what your business and website actually do, and the generator is up to date with UK law. Checking the finished policy against your real website catches the gaps.
